Why you feel less thirsty when it's cold — and why that's a trap

The bottle on your desk now takes three days to empty, when in July it never lasted the day. That isn't carelessness: as soon as the temperature drops, your body switches off thirst. The problem is that it doesn't switch off the losses — it only moves them.

- In the cold, blood shifts back towards the trunk: the body believes it is “full” and the sensation of thirst falls by around 40%.

Cold cuts thirst, not the losses
When the temperature falls, the vessels in your hands, feet and skin narrow to limit heat loss. This is peripheral vasoconstriction, and it has a direct consequence: blood flows back towards the trunk.
Your pressure sensors — the baroreceptors, sitting in the large vessels — then measure a higher central volume than usual. They draw a logical but mistaken conclusion: the body is well filled. Secretion of vasopressin, the hormone that tells the kidneys to hold on to water, drops. And thirst fades.
Work on cold exposure measures a fall in the sensation of thirst of roughly 40% compared with a temperate environment, at an identical level of dehydration. This isn't a malfunction, it's a trade-off: faced with cold, the body prioritises maintaining its core temperature, and fine-tuning water balance moves down the list.

Four losses specific to the cold season

The signs people blame on the season
- An end-of-day tiredness put down to the lack of daylight.
- Tight lips and skin — blamed on the cold alone.
- Diffuse headaches in the late afternoon.
- Concentration slipping, a cotton-wool head.
- Darker urine — the only objective marker, and it costs nothing.
None of these signs is specific, and none proves anything on its own. But if they show up alongside the first frosts and stay with you all winter, hydration is the first hypothesis to rule out — before concluding it's the lack of light. How much to drink, in practice
- Your needs don't fall because the thermometer does. Outside exercise and heatwaves, the guidance is unchanged — around 2 litres of fluids for a woman, 2.5 for a man, set out in How much water should you really drink each day.
- Schedule it rather than waiting for the signal. In summer thirst handles that. In winter it doesn't: a glass on waking, one mid-morning, one mid-afternoon replace the missing prompt.
- Hot drinks count in full. Tea, herbal infusions and coffee all go into the daily total, caffeine included — the detail is in Coffee, tea, alcohol: which ones really dehydrate you.
- Trust the colour of your urine rather than the sensation. Pale straw: good. Dark: already late.
- Think minerals, not just water. Heavier urine output carries away sodium and potassium, not only fluid — the whole subject of Why water alone is no longer enough.

Frequently asked questions
Do you really need less water in winter?
No. Outside exercise and hot weather, your baseline needs are much the same. What changes is the signal: thirst fades while the losses continue, through breathing, the kidneys and heated air.
Why do you urinate more often when it's cold?
It's cold-induced diuresis. Vasoconstriction raises central blood volume, the kidneys read that as a surplus and pass more. The phenomenon is normal, but it speeds up water loss.
Do tea and herbal infusions count towards intake?
Yes, in full. A caffeine-free infusion is flavoured water, and both tea and coffee remain positive in your fluid balance despite the caffeine.
Does a humidifier replace drinking?
No. It limits the drying of skin and airways, which is useful, but it makes up for neither the losses through the kidneys nor those already incurred. The two are complementary, not interchangeable.
